A 17-year-old student who wanted to get home for a Christmas holiday says he will be doing it alone.
John Walsh was studying for a degree in business management at Dundalk University when he got sick last month and is now being treated at St Mary’s Hospital.
He said he would be going back to his home town of Dundalk for Christmas.
He had a bad infection but was feeling better and was going to go back to Dundalk.
He told The Irish Mail on Sunday that he is feeling very lucky.
“I was just looking at a picture on Facebook of my friends and they said, ‘We’re doing this Christmas shopping at St Michael’s church, this is a great opportunity for you to be with your family for Christmas’.”
He said the fact he was going alone meant he was more likely to have a good Christmas.
“It’s going to be more peaceful, I’m sure it will be a lot quieter,” he said. The Gardaí said they are now aware of the situation.
“As soon as we were aware of this, we took the appropriate action, and we are now working with the family to determine how to best proceed with the Christmas shopping,” said Garda John Byrne.
“We are also aware of Mr Walsh’s situation, and that his father is also a Garda, and he is aware of his right to self-determination.”
The Gardai will not be releasing the details of the incident until they have spoken to the family, who have not been given any information, he said, adding that it is not known if there will be any charges.
“He is being supported by the Garda family at this time and they will be in touch with him as to what is the next steps,” Mr Byrne said.
