WASHINGTON (AP) — A group with dementia who have struggled with the cost of their care say they are trying a new route: They are raising money to buy a new electric car.
The Washington Post reported that about a dozen elderly people are trying out crowdfunding sites for a new vehicle.
They are seeking donations from the public, businesses and even a government agency.
The elderly said they are in a “very dire” situation because their home was burned down in a fire last year and they are struggling to pay the $7,500 to $10,000 they need to buy the new vehicle, which they said they will need to use for the rest of their lives.
The elderly are also struggling with a shortage of electric cars.
Dementia Foundation spokesman Greg Brown said they’re doing this because they want to help other people with dementia get the care they need.
“We want to make sure that if they are living with dementia that they can get the best care that they need,” Brown said.
The group, called the Washington Dementias and the Dementiacs of America, is a nonprofit group.
The group’s website says the organization is made up of “older adults who have been through an uncertain period of their life and are seeking the help that will help them make it through the next phase of their caring process.”
The Post reported (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/wp/2017/08/18/crowdfunding-to-help-older-people-with-dementia-pay-for-their-care/) that one of the group’s members, a man who asked to remain anonymous, said he was planning to donate $1,000 to the D&AA and $500 to the Alzheimer’s Association.
He said the organization has received some great support from donors who want to give, but he and the other members are struggling financially.
“It’s been tough for us to do this, and I feel like it’s only going to get worse,” he said.
“You know, there are so many other people out there who can do the same thing,” he added.
He added that it’s too expensive for him to buy an electric car because he has no money left to buy anything.
But he said the car is a way for him and other seniors to make the payments he needs to keep paying bills.
“If we could just get this car on the road and get out and do this stuff, it would be a lot more than just paying bills,” he told the Post.
“They’re not going to do that.”
